Thank you to the many parents who came to the PTA General Meeting yesterday. We had a great turnout and lots of good information about the programs sponsored by the PTA as well as the myriad ways for parents to get involved in the school.
The kids learned about the Walkathon (October 19) today at lunchtime assemblies and should have brought home packets. Please mark your calendars, help your child(ren) to get sponsors, and think about volunteering to make the event a success!
We have some news about the physical facilities here. To keep kids safer during recesses, the OUSD will be installing a fence by the amphitheater near the sidewalk. I was thrilled to learn that the District will be paying for it!
Teachers have been administering beginning-of-the-year assessments in English-Language Arts (ELA) for the past couple of weeks. These are mandated by the school district and provide useful data for teachers about the strengths and needs of each student. These and other benchmark assessments will be given throughout the year in ELA and math. In addition, Oakland recently started requiring a science writing assessment, as part of the new Common Core State Standards is making sure that students are writing about what they wonder, hypothesize, observe and conclude.
I hope to see many of you at the Pancake Breakfast tomorrow morning sometime between 8:00 -12:30 pm (Saturday, September 21) and at the Community Gathering on Tuesday, September 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm.
