A couple of updates: Planning 2012/13, PTA Guest Speaker, Open House

Dear Crocker Families,

It’s the time of year when we begin making plans for next year.  One part of these plans is our enrollment:  how many students are going to be here and how many classes will we need.  You can help by letting us know as soon as possible if you are not returning to Crocker Highlands in the 2012-2013 school year.   Some possible scenarios are a fourth kindergarten class and a third 3rd grade.  But it all depends upon our numbers, which drives the budget.  Keeping us informed of your plans helps us to make our plans!

At last week’s PTA/Equity Committee meeting, we had a wonderful speaker, Sherri Patterson, M.F.C.C.  She covered many topics related to social emotional learning and discussed how we can create a caring and bully-free community.  Some things that the adults in the community need to avoid doing are: taking sides, excluding their child’s classmates, labeling and gossiping about kids.  One response she recommended the children use when they witness bullying behavior is, “We don’t do that in our school.”  A parent recently asked me if the conflict/bullying has increased recently.  I don’t believe that to be the case, but I do feel we are more aware of it and focusing on it in order to build a truly caring community at Crocker Highlands.  Sherri Patterson also shared a recommended reading list – I’ll post copies on the bulletin board outside the office in case anyone is interested.

And speaking of community, this Thursday is Open House from 6:30 – 8:00.  Please come by and see all the great work that has gone on in your child’s classroom this year.  We have a minimum day on Thursday in order to give the teachers time to prepare for Open House.

Have a great week!

Join me for Coffee this Friday 5/18

Do you have some burning questions that you have been dying to ask me? Are you wondering about the state of the school, what we are doing and where we are going? Well, we have a “Coffee with the Principal” on Friday morning at 8:45 a.m. in the Art Room. Stop on by and bring your questions…or just come on by to listen and hear what the hot topics might be! (Well, maybe lukewarm topics…)

Speaker on 5/17/12

If you can, come to the PTA presentation tomorrow evening by Sherri Patterson. She’s going to share tools to promote social thinking, relationship skills, and anti-bullying strategies among our kids to help us build a school community that is safe and caring for everyone. I went to a presentation by her a few months ago and thought it was very worthwhile!

Crocker Elementary / OUSD meeting (6/6 @ 6:30PM)

Crocker Elementary / OUSD meeting (6/6 @ 6:30PM)

Dear Crocker Community,

As many of you know, recently there have been many discussions regarding the expanded boundaries and the impact on enrollment at Crocker Highlands Elementary.  We were able to add an additional kindergarten class this year to accommodate all our neighborhood families but that is a short-term solution.

We are having a meeting with David Montes de Oca, Executive Director, Quality Community Schools Development of the Oakland Unified School District, to address the long-term enrollment capacity of the school  on Wednesday, June 6, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at Crocker Highlands Library. Everyone is invited.

Requesting Parent/Guardian Feedback on Crocker PTA Funded Programs

Dear Families,
We are currently reviewing 2011-2012 PTA-funded programs and reviewing proposals for PTA-funded programs for the 2012-2013 school year.  We would like your input.  It’s been a while since we surveyed parents/guardians about the PTA programs and we decided we need to hear from you.  A short survey has been created to hear your opinion about what are our students’ needs, and how the programs are meeting those needs.  The staff did a similar survey to assess programs, and now it’s your turn.  When do you need to take it by?  Well, the sooner the better!  We would love to have your responses by Saturday, May 5.  Please take a few minutes to take the survey.  Here’s the link:
Thank you for your ongoing support of making Crocker Highlands the amazing school that it is!
